Research topics

Main topic

We have introduced a methodology for using structured information, contained in images, for improving environmental forecasting. It is based on two steps:

  1. Images are assimilated into an Image Model construct to estimate relevant image information.
  2. Assimilation of the estimated information -- considered as pseudo-observations -- into an environmental simulation model.

The method has been applied in the context of ocean circulation: Sea Surface Temperature images are used to estimate the surface velocity, in turn assimilated in an operational Black Sea circulation model.

Main scientific and administrative responsabilities

Coordination (in collaboration with Arthur Vidard) of INRIA's Associated Team ADAMS gathering the INRIA project-teams CLIME and MOISE, and the Marine Hydrophysical Institute from the Science Academy of Ukraine, the Institute of Numerical Mathematics from the Science Academy of Russia and the Nodia Institute of Geophysics from the Science Academy of Georgia.
