                  WORKSHOP ON CODING AND CRYPTOGRAPHY

                  January 11--14, 1999, Paris, France

                    ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

The workshop is organized by INRIA and sponsored by the "Ecoles de
Coetquidan".  The aim of this meeting is to bring together researchers
in all aspects of coding theory, cryptography and related areas,
theoretical or applied. It will be held at the "Cercle Militaire"
St-Augustin from January 11 to 14, 1999.

                           SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Seven sessions are scheduled from Monday morning to Thursday
noon. They will be composed of invited and contributed papers. Invited
speakers will be:

  Ernst Gabidulin, Russia
  James Massey, Denmark
  Vera Pless, USA
  John Dillon, USA (to be confirmed)

                              SUBMISSIONS

Deadlines:
  Reception of submission by                        October   2, 1998
  Notification by                                   November 13, 1998
  Final version for the book of abstracts by        November 27, 1998

Topics include, but are not limited to:

+ coding theory: block codes (linear or nonlinear), cyclic codes,
  Euclidean codes, covering radius, weight distributions, soft
  decision decoding; convolutional codes, turbo coding, soft output
  decoding;

+ cryptology: block and stream ciphers, hash functions, public key
  cryptography, digital signature, secret sharing, authentication,
  cryptanalysis, copyright protection;

+ connections between these two main areas, including finite groups,
  finite fields, algebraic geometry, function fields, random structures,
  lattices, combinatorics, designs, Boolean functions, sequences.

Those wishing to contribute a 20 minutes talk are invited to submit a
2-10 page extended abstract, before October 2, 1998, by sending either
three hard copies to

                        PRELIMINARY INFORMATION

The "Cercle Militaire" is located Place Saint-Augustin in the 8th
arrondissement of Paris. Nearest metro stations are "St-Augustin" and
"St-Lazare".

The workshop will start with a welcome cocktail on Sunday January 10
evening. A banquet is scheduled on Tuesday night.  The cocktail, the
banquet and the lunches of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will take
place at the "Cercle Militaire".

on a personal basis.  Additional banquet ticket will be available at
the approximative cost of 250FF.

by CHECK or by BANK TRANSFER.
