Hail Damage Estimation

Observation des dégâts de la grêle sur les cultures au moyen d'acquisitions satellitaires

Observation of hail damages on vineyards using satellite acquisitions

Contract description

This feasibility study is supported by a research convention (number 1053), started on July 21st, 2005, between INRIA and Michel Artigues, acting for the LYNX company, currently under creation.

Objectives

This study examines the feasibility of assessing, using satellite images, the damages caused by hail to vineyards production. Hail damages are currently manually estimated by insurance experts, and are defined as the loss in final production, expressed in percentage with respect to the expected total production. They are estimated for each parcel, and constitute the basis for the compensation granted to wine producers. Assessing hail damages using satellite data could provide insurance companies with an objective and cost-effective tool for completing or validating the expertises.
