ENVIAIR

Technologies avancées de traitement d’images pour la surveillance automatique de la déforestation, de la dégradation du sol, et de l’expansion du système de semis direct.

Advanced image processing technologies for the automatic monitoring of deforestation, soil degradation, and expansion of the zero-tillage system.

Context

ENVIAIR is a research project funded by the INRIA-CNPq programme. The ENVIAIR projects has started in November 2005 and will last two years.

Objectives

The general objective is the development of a software prototype, that makes use of satellite images to automatically monitor land use/land cover changes, and that will be transferred to actors responsible of land management in the Taquari basin, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The propotype will include satellite image processing tools for automatic land use/land cover change detection, in order to control:

The project will make use of large scale and freely available satellite imagery with high temporal resolution such as MODIS or NOAA-AVHRR, enabling the development of methodologies, applicable to large areas at low cost.

The developed tools will be applied to savannah areas of Brasil, more specifically to the Taquari basin, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. An extension if foreseen in the framework of the 'Rio de la Plata project' (funded by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research), to apply these tools on the Rio de la Plata basin, a hydrological basin as large as 3,000,000 square kilometers.
